The Contucci family has been cultivating Sangiovese since the Renaissance, and by 1700, their dedication to the grape helped establish it as Vino Nobile, as documented in 1773: "a noble wine destined for the table of nobles." The winery even has a claim that "both house and cellars were built in the XIII century and were part of the old inner walls of Montepulciano." Their estate is 170 hectares in size, of which 21 hectares are vineyards, with 15 of those farmed at 280 to 450 meters in elevation and reserved for Vino Nobile production. The soil is mostly "pliocenica" mixed with some clay and sand.
